How
to Remove a Toolbar
Surfing on
the web these days can be fraught with peril. Invasive
ad-ware and spy-ware can be installed on your system
almost without warning just because you accepted an
invitation for some new tool offered on a website or
through an email.
Have you ever
opened up your web browser to discover that it has grown
another toolbar overnight?
This little
blessing is supposed to make your browsing experience
better, but often times it just ends up stealing a
precious half inch from your browser window and perhaps
even ends up slowing your computer down.
Do you know
that many of these toolbars are tracking your behavior on
the web and transmitting the information back to the
owners?
Information
about how users search for information and what kind of
sites they end up visiting is valuable and there are many
who will pay big money for it.
Do you want
someone profiting from you without you having any idea
just how much they’re telling someone else about
you?
Helpful and
friendly toolbars can also be a source of those
irritating pop up windows that you’re always trying to
get rid of.
Not all
toolbars are bad. Google offers a toolbar
that fights pop up windows and lets you search from
anywhere.
Alexa offers a toolbar that suggests useful related
websites according to where you’re at right
now. Both
toolbars have a tracking function that you can turn off
if you wish.
If you want
to surf without your toolbars, you can use the ‘view’
option on your browser window and ‘unclick’ the toolbar
you don’t wish to see. If you’ve found that
you have a toolbar installed that you want permanently
removed, follow these steps: Click on ‘Start’ –
‘Settings’ – ‘Control Panel’ – ‘Add/Remove Software’,
then find the name of the offending tool bar and remove
it.
Some toolbars
will be difficult to remove. They’ll try to trick you
into keeping it. Just read everything carefully and be
sure not to agree to any other downloads in the process
of removal.
