How to Get Rid of Skunks
According to
Jan White, D.V.M., “skunks are everywhere these
days.
When they get
displaced from a rural or suburban habitat, they pack
their bags and go to another location.
They can do
pretty well in cities.” It is safe to say that
most people know what a skunk looks like. A black furry animal
with a white stripe down its back is a clear
giveaway.
If you have
seen a skunk outside your home, here is some advice on
how to get rid of skunks.
Skunks are
important in the balance of nature. They feed on all sorts
of insects, rodents, and other nasty
creatures.
However, when there is no food available, they descend
upon a home where other types of food are
available.
They rummage through garbage, and if you have outdoor
pets, they seize upon their food as well.
If you have a
skunk problem, there are several rules you should
follow.
Since skunks hide in dry, cool spaces – seal all openings
under your house, or crawl space. Put all garbage in
double bags and secure tightly. Remove all outdoor pet
foods. Rid
the outside of your home of clutter, such as wood,
building materials, and dried leaves. These are temporary
solutions to a long-term problem.
The other
alternative to getting rid of a skunk is to trap
it. Build a
crate and place some dog food inside it. Once the skunk
is trapped, call your local animal shelter or animal
control center to come to your home. Do not attempt to touch
the skunk in any way. Stay calm, and wait for
the animal control professional to arrive. If the skunk
feels threatened, their defensive mode will kick in and
will spray you with a very unpleasant odor.
Most animals
can appear docile, but if they are trapped or feel their
territory is being invaded, they will protect themselves.
Skunks are no exception. Be smart and alert. By following
these tips, you should be able to get rid of skunks
without a problem.
