How to Remove Pop-Ups

There is nothing more annoying while surfing the Internet, than to have advertisements constantly popping up on your screen, sometimes several in succession just from landing on one page.

Fortunately, most browsers now include pop-up blockers, so you won't need to worry about removing them when you can't receive them.

In Internet Explorer, this feature is found on the tool bar, under Tools/Pop-Up Blocker.

It should be turned on, unless you are using a site that opens new windows for a purpose, such as a game site where you need to enter a room that is separate from the home page. Windows XP gives you the option to allow pop-ups temporarily, from that site.

Many of the multi-purpose anti-virus products also have pop-up blocker features, so there is no need to go out and buy software specifically for this problem, even when you appear to be getting pop-ups that are "breaking through" these protective measures.

In all likelihood, you have gotten spyware on your computer either because your virus software does not also cover this problem, or because it was not installed when you got the spyware.

A spyware program piggybacks on other downloads from the Internet, whether it is a song file, an .wav file, or even a file sent by a friend, who has it on their own computer. These programs not only allow pop-ups to break through your other security measures, but they can also slow down your system, cause it to reboot, and gather information about your surfing habits.

To make sure you are not the victim of spyware pop-ups, install a spyware program, and make sure it is kept up to date. These are often available free on the Internet, although you may wish to purchase a program that keeps you updated automatically.
