How to Remove Adware
With the proliferation of viruses, Trojans, and other computer threats, many people who are not technically adept can become confused by the terms applied to these, and other computer programs. One of the most common misinterpretations is that adware and spyware are the same things.
Spyware is a threat to your computer. It is an unauthorized file that you download from the Internet or a friend's computer who is already affected. They are often "piggybacked" on a legitimate program, game, or other file, and you will never know that it's running in the background of your other software. It's called spyware for a good reason- the program is designed to gather details of your surfing habits, and can record and send to the originator, such data as information that you fill out while ordering goods online, and email contacts. It can also be responsible for disrupting your system, shutting down your browser, and allowing undesirable pop-ups to appear on your screen.
On the other hand, Adware is a legitimate program, although its advertising components can sometimes be annoying. Adware is a "trial" version of a game or other program, that a company permits you to download for free. During the trial period, most programs will allow you to use the majority of functions the program comes with, while running ad banners, or pop-up screens. These ads are the way that the company recoups some of the cost of the programs that are never purchased by users. They do not gather information about you, although it's not inconceivable that spyware could be attached to a download without the site knowing it has been added.
When you download an Adware program and try it out, you have the opportunity to see if it's worth buying. If you decide not to purchase it, then you can remove it simply by going to the Start Menu, choosing Settings and then Control Panel, and selecting Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list of installed programs then check the Adware's box, and follow the uninstall directions.
